PITTSBURGH—The Digital Research Library of the University of Pittsburgh has posted all 435 paintings from John James Audubon's "Birds of America" on one website. This comes as part of a larger project by the university to digitize the entire collection of its Darlington Memorial Library, whose main focus is American history and literature. The collection holds one of about 120 existing original folios of Audubon's work. The paintings can be viewed through the Digital Research Library's Web site. Each work is accompanied by a link to Audubon's corresponding entry in his companion text, "Ornithological Biography," and visitors can order reproductions. Proceeds from the reproduction sales will help the library fund the costs of its preservation efforts.
