NEW YORK— An old master painting that was confiscated by the East German government in 1985 and returned to its owners this year will hit the auction block at Christie's on April 15, reports the New York Times.

Painted in 1590 by the Dutch master Cornelis van Haarlem, the more than eight-by-six-foot Hercules and Achelous was acquired by the Potschien family in Berlin around 1925. The East German government put in on view in the Bode Museum in Berlin after confiscating it.

“This is a must-have picture for a number of public collections,” Nicholas Hall, an international director of Christie's old master paintings department, told the Times. “It is perhaps the most important Northern Mannerist painting to come on the market for about 20 years.” The painting is estimated to sell for $1.5 to $2 million.
