Judge Says Fisk Can Keep O'Keeffe Collection

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Fisk University will keep its art collection, despite the fact that a judge determined the school violated the terms set forth by Georgia O'Keeffe when she donated the works in 1949, the Associated Press reports. The university and the New Mexico-based Georgia O'Keeffe Museum had been locked in a legal battle, with the museum suing for rights to the 101-piece collection after the financially strapped school attempted to sell some of the paintings, and because the school was storing the works and not displaying them as O'Keeffe had required. Nashville Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle permanently banned Fisk from selling the artworks and said the university must retrieve the collection from storage and put it on display by October. The artworks could still be taken away if Fisk does not comply with those orders.
