STOCKHOLM—The Royal Swedish Art Academy is offering up a Rembrandt painting for sale, but on the condition that the buyer must donate the work to Stockholm's National Museum, the Independent (London) reports. The painting, The Conspiracy of the Batavians under Claudius Civilis, is worth an estimated 750 million kronor ($124 million), but the academy announced that it will sell the masterpiece for 300 million kronor ($49 million) because of the special terms on which its sale is based.

Painted in 1661–62, the painting hangs currently in the National Museum and is one of its primary attractions. "It has hung at the National Museum since 1866. That's where it's going to stay," says Olle Granath, secretary of the academy. The academy plans to use the money from the sale to fund exhibitions and other events.
