MOSCOW—Russia's lower house, the State Duma, has voted 345 to 57 to return to Germany six 14th-century stained-glass panels that were seized from a church at the end of World War II, the AP reports. The panels belonged to the Marienkirche in Frankfurt an der Oder, and follow 111 stained-glass panels from the same church, which had been held at the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg, that Russia returned to Germany in 2003.
The bill must be approved by the Russian upper house and then will go to the president for his signature. Russia and Germany have fought for many years over art looted from Germany at the end of the war, with Germany arguing that objects were taken illegally and Russia claiming that they serve as retribution for the 27 million Soviets who died and the 100 museums that were destroyed during the war. |
