PARIS—Paris’s most famous landmark, the Eiffel Tower, will soon have a new look, subtly altering the Parisian skyline, The Guardian reports. The new design will be completed in time for the structure’s 120th anniversary next year.
Serero Architects of Paris has won a competition to redesign the tower's public viewing platform and reception areas. Their plan calls for doubling the capacity of the public viewing area on the tower's top floor, but does not permanently modify the existing structure. The new platform will have a cantilevered design that attaches to the tower in a similar way to how an aircraft's wings are fastened to the fuselage. Gustave Eiffel created the tower as a temporary structure for the 1889 World's Fair. Although initially detested by the French public, it has become the most visited fee-charging monument in the world, attracting nearly 7 million visitors a year. |
