His body was discovered on Saturday in the woodlands in Strathclyde, a remote area of Scotland, the day after his third solo show at Sadie Coles gallery in London closed. The directors of the gallery offered this tribute: "Angus was funny, ridiculously charming, a wonderful cook and great host, a crazy dancer, a radical gardener, a nature lover, and an intensely intelligent artist. He was a dear friend to numerous other artists and had a huge number of close friends from all walks of life. We will all miss his love and kindness." Fairhurst, who was 41, was a Goldsmiths College graduate and took part in the seminal 1988 "Freeze" exhibition alongside Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, and 13 others. He worked across mediums, yet was best known for his bronze gorilla sculptures and collages of billboard advertisements and fashion magazines with the figures and text removed. |
