Arbus Auction Canceled Amid Lawsuit

NEW YORK—Philips de Pury & Co. has canceled a New York auction of Diane Arbus photographs scheduled for today. The sale was called off because of a lawsuit against the current owner of the photos filed by the previous owner, a Brooklyn-based collector of African-American art. The collector claims not to have known the images were by Arbus when he sold a group of them for roughly $3,500. The Associated Press reports that a private sale is in the works.
