Sacramento Chooses Artists to Design Airport Art

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Artists Donald Lipski, Lawrence Argent, and Christian Moeller have been chosen to design art pieces as part of Sacramento's airport expansion, reports the Sacramento Bee. Of the airport's $5 million budget for art, $1.5 million will go to the three artists' work, which will be integrated into the structure's architecture. The remaining $3.5 million will eventually be allocated to other artists whose pieces will be added to the airport at a later time.

Having done public art pieces and installations in New York, Denver, and Tokyo, respectively, Lipski, Argent, and Moeller have received praise from a number of members of the community. But some are skeptical about public art in general. Lou Meyer of Rancho Cordova commented, "I'm not an admirer of the $800,000 flying cockroaches at the airport now...If you would like to decorate the airport with art, it should be from private art admirers."
