The donation includes 30 canvases and 36 ink-wash paintings created between 1963 and 2003. The works will join six others Wu donated in 2005. Wu, 89, whose work can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among other museum collections, turned down requests from private collectors, choosing instead to place the works, which he says are "the best of the best," in a museum. He chose the Shanghai museum because "the city is noted for receiving new styles and new things." Director Li Lei said the museum would open a special hall to permanently display the collection. |
