NEW YORK—After twelve years in Chelsea, Clementine Gallery is closing for good next weekend. Originally located on the second floor of 526 West 26th Street, the gallery moved to its current location at 623 West 27th Street three years ago. The current exhibition, "Gary Panter: Pictures from the Psychedelic Swamp, 1972–2001," co-curated by Dan Nadel, Elizabeth Burke, and Abby Messitte, will be the gallery's last, ending May 10.

Burke, who co-directs Clementine with Messitte, told ARTINFO the move was mostly due to the slumping economy. “We decided we should do it while we’re ahead. We’ve never had large backers and have always been our own entity. Abby and I have run the gallery exactly the way we wanted to, but we can’t keep up with the overhead. Gary Panter is our grand finale.” Burke noted she felt this coming summer would have been a particularly rough time for the gallery financially. When asked what the gallerists' future plans were, Burke said, “We’ll be concentrating on helping find new homes for our artists" — who include Neil Farber, Robyn O'Neil, and Wayne White. "After that we’ll be working in the art world on some level, but not necessarily for other people per se.”
