LONDON—A poll conducted for Travelodge U.K. last week showed that Antony Gormley's public art sculpture Angel of the North is the most readily identified landmark in Britain, reports Bloomberg. Of people polled, 83 percent could name the sculpture, which stands on the side of the A1 highway near Gateshead, as compared with 48 percent who named Trafalgar Square, 38 percent who recognized St. Paul's Cathedral, and 22 percent who identified the Brighton Pavilion.

The steel angel, which stands 66 feet tall and has a 178-foot wingspan, was completed in 1998. A £2 million ($3.9 million) public-art commission is now in the works for the Ebbsfleet Valley, the biggest project of its kind since Gormley's. Shortlisted artists include Rachel Whiteread and Mark Wallinger.
