NEW YORK—Coinciding with what would have been the beloved late artist's 50th birthday on May 4, the Keith Haring Foundation recently announced that it has donated $1 million to the New Museum. This endowment, the largest one ever made by the foundation, will fund the Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education and Public Programs, a position currently held by Eungie Joo, as well as establish the School and Youth Programs Fund. This fund will support the museum's Global Classroom program, which integrates contemporary art and global issues to foster cultural awareness in youth.

Haring, who was known for his prolific involvement with educational community art projects, created work for the New Museum's collection during his residence in the Lower East Side in the 1980s. A neon-colored mural painted by Haring at the intersection of Bowery and Houston, near the site of the museum's new location, was also recently recreated.

The gift was honored at a private remembrance celebration held at the museum on May 4th.
