An increasing number of on-the-ball gallerists are using their Web sites to offer video introductions to the artists they represent. The example I’ve chosen here is a brief portrait of Fred Tomaselli from James Cohan Gallery’s site, which is actually an edited-down version of a half-hour video made by the now-defunct company Gallery HD. I’ve selected this particular piece not only because it has just gone online, but also because by showing things like Tomaselli’s varnishing process and his detailed painting between layers of varnish, it is a fantastic addition to our understanding of the artist’s technique. While it may not be an “art video,” this sort of documentary piece is an example of one of the exciting ways in which the medium is being used in today’s art world.
