KOLKATA, India—In a joint venture between the West Bengal government and a private enterprise, India is getting what the India Times is calling Asia's "first museum of modern art," to be designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.
The 550-crore ($130,704,117) new Kolkata Museum of Modern Art, to be built on the outskirts of Kolkata, will comprise a national gallery, Western galleries, far Eastern galleries, and an academic wing; the museum's collection ranges from 19th-century to contemporary art. KMOMA managing trustee Rakhi Sarkar signed an agreement with the Pritzker Prize-winning architecture firm yesterday. |
