A 1927 bus garage designed by the Constructivist architect Konstantin Melnikov is to house Moscow's newest center for contemporary art and culture, reports the Art Newspaper.
The brainchild of Daria "Dasha" Zhukova, 26, and supported by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the Center for Contemporary Culture Moscow will open in September with a retrospective of work by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, the couple's first in their native city. In the future, the center will commission site-specific installations and will feature emerging Russian artists.
The center will operate as a nonprofit and seek funding internationally; Zhukova will be advised by an international council of experts including Tate director Nicholas Serota.
On June 12 the CCC will host an exclusive party featuring a performance by British singer Amy Winehouse, an installation by Mexican artist Rafael Lozano Hemmer, and a small exhibition on Melnikov and the architect and engineer Vladimir Shukhov, who also collaborated on the garage.
