The work was discovered, along with a sketchbook, by Doretta Peppa, who claims that her father Meletis "liberated" it from the Nazis during a raid on a German train at the end of the occupation in 1944. Peppa placed it in a bank vault after speaking with the head of conservation at the Greek National Gallery, who certified its authenticity as a rare van Gogh and the third portrait of Dr. Gachet painted by the artist. Many experts support the claim, valuing the work at $100 million. Others question it, citing a market filled with van Gogh forgeries. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has rejected the notebook found with the painting, but Peppa insists that the Nazi stamp and code on the back of the portrait are added proof of its authenticity. |
