Whitfield Fine Art, London
On view in "Grand Gallery": "Head of Christ" by Correggio (1489-1534) and "Saint Peter Visiting Saint Agatha in Prison" (ca. 1624) by Simon Vouet
LONDON—In an attempt to stir up excitement like that greeting contemporary art these days, dealers
Partridge Fine Art and
Whitfield Fine Art, both from London, are teaming up to stage “The Grand Gallery,” a selling exhibition running from June 4 to 18 at Partridge’s New Bond Street space. Focusing on the Baroque tradition, the show gathers powerful works by such blue-chip artists as
Simon Vouet,
Correggio,
Mattia Preti,
Nicolas Poussin,
Titian and
Guido Reni, whose only recorded self-portrait is on offer. Among the other pieces for sale are Vouet’s
Saint Peter Visiting Saint Agatha in Prison, a depiction of Peter healing the tortured female martyr, priced at €4 million ($6.3 million), and Correggio’s sorrowful masterpiece
Head of Christ, for €5 million ($7.9 million). “In scale, sophistication, symbolism and detail, they are epic pictures,” says Partridge’s
Oscar Humphries, who adds that “for a work of such academic importance, at €650,000 ($1 million), Reni’s self-portrait is a steal.”
