LONDON—
Whitford Fine Art, in
London, is playing it cool this summer with the show “Post-War to Pop.” Highlighted are 28 British works from the 1950s to ’70s, a period when experiments in abstraction—from the severe geometry of Hard-Edge painting to the far-out opticalillusions of Op art—met the ironic appropriated imagery of Pop art. The show presents a fine chance to scoop up a piece of history:
Robyn Denny?s painting
A Day 3 (Here and Then Series), 1968–73, in which luminous planes of color hover on the canvas, is selling for £50,000 ($100,000), and
Clive Barker?s chrome-plated brass sculpture
Torso of Marianne Faithfull, 1975, depicting the rambunctious singer-songwriter as little more than a tube with a mirrored surface, is priced at £38,000 ($76,000). Don’t miss
Allen Jones?s shout across the pond:
Male and Female Composition, 1964, his largest painting, which he executed in the
Chelsea Hotel, one of New York’s most famous bohemian landmarks. The show runs until June 20. Prices range from £12,000 to £350,000 ($24,000–697,000).
