SYDNEY—An exhibition featuring photographs of naked 12- and 13-year-olds has been shut down in Sydney, the Australian Associated Press reports. The show of works by Australian photographer Bill Henson was due to open tonight at Roslyn Oxley9 gallery.

Public outcry led the gallery to cancel the opening right before it was set to begin; police have now stepped in to conduct an investigation, and the show will remain closed until further notice. Police are also investigating the images on the gallery's Web site and have referred the issue to the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

A superintendent told members of the press that the police plan to speak to the subjects of the photos and their parents before making any further decisions. A gallery spokeswoman told the press that she hoped the exhibition would be allowed to open. "It is a beautiful show," she said.
