Three Rediscovered Goya Drawings to Hit the Block at Christie's

LONDON—Three Goya drawings that have not been seen since 1877 will go on sale at Christie's on July 8 and are expected to bring in almost £3 million ($5.9 million), the Associated Press reports. The drawings had been presumed lost for more than 130 years, after they were sold at a landmark auction in Paris of 105 drawings from the artist's private notebooks. They have actually been in a private Swiss collection.

The Constable Lampinos Stitched Inside a Dead Horse, Repentance, and Bajar Rinendo (Down They Come) are still on the mounts from the 1877 auction and are considered to be in "exceptional condition," having never been framed or exposed to light. The first two are from Goya's album "Images of Spain," used from 1812 to 1820, and the latter was in his notebook "Witches and Women," from 1819–23.

The drawings will go on display at Christie's London four days before the July 8 Old Master and 19th Century Drawings sale.
