The auction week, from May 24 through 29, included the house's sales of Southeast Asian modern and contemporary art, Asian contemporary and Chinese 20th-century art, Fine Chinese modern and classical paintings, and Chinese ceramics, jewels, and watches. The week saw a number of records set: Zeng Fanzhi took the record for a Chinese contemporary artwork sold at auction with his Mask Series 1996 No. 6, which sold for HK $75.4 million (U.S. $9.7 million), several dozen artist and category records were set, and the jewelry sale was the most valuable ever organized by Christie's anywhere. According to the auction house, the figures represent the highest total ever achieved in a sales season in Asia and indicate a 58.5 percent market share in the region. |
