Art Basel PreviewBy Chris Bors

BASEL— Now in its 39th year, Art Basel continues to provide one-stop shopping for the art world’s most important collectors. While it remains to be seen whether the momentum of recent auction successes in New York and London will continue at the fair, it’s a safe bet that almost all of the approximately 55,000 attendees expected in Basel this week come with one thing on their mind — commerce. For buyers, sellers, and aspirants alike, the big draw is the fair's "Art Galleries" section, featuring booths occupied by the most important dealers in the world. Culled from 1,000 applicants, the 300 attending galleries present work by some 2,000 artists, ranging from (relatively) inexpensive emerging creators to “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” 20th- and 21st-century blue-chippers.
The fair kicks off with its exclusive vernissage on June 3, but this ARTINFO preview can get you inside the convention center even sooner. Click on the photo gallery to your left to see what some of the top galleries are selling. |
