Blowouts and Bargains in Basel

By Judd Tully

Published: June 5, 2008
BASEL— With the tremendous variety of blue-chip and other graded art to choose from at the 39th edition of Art Basel and the satellite fairs, the possibilities for bargains and over-blown offerings are almost infinite.

Even without much American activity, commerce was definitely in the ascendant in most sectors, though one might feel a tad sorry for those American gallerists who brought material especially suited for their home market (Gerhard Richter, for example, tends to play better in Basel than Keith Haring). All in all, business in Basel has been assuredly satisfactory this year, particularly given the current rocky economic climate.
