Gallery hopping in New York typically requires comfy shoes or taxi fare. But in May, PaceWildenstein hired a fleet of 30 pedicabs to zip visitors up and down the streets of Chelsea to its three shows of Zhang Huan’s monumental sculpture, ash paintings and woodcuts. Braving the bright red carts were Pearl Lam and L+M Art’s Dominique Lévy, plus the artists James Siena and Tara Donovan, who delighted in waving to people from her wheeled perch. “The experience was so New York but with a touch of Chinese culture,” says Donovan. Zhang, who lives in Shanghai, forsook his chauffeured car on opening night and rode a rickshaw all the way to the dinner in his honor in the Meatpacking District, despite cobblestoned streets and a hair-raising turn across the West Side Highway.
