Marei von Saher

By Sarah Douglas

Published: July 2, 2008
The town’s ice-skating instructor of choice, Von Saher became a collector in an unusual way. Two years ago, she won back from the Dutch government some 200 Old Master paintings, including works by Anthony Van Dyck and Claude Lorrain, that her father-in-law, Jacques Goudstikker, had been forced to sell to the Nazis in Amsterdam. She is now in possession of about one-third of the paintings (she sold the remainder through Christie’s) and has loaned 35 of them to the Bruce for the exhibition “Reclaimed: Paintings from the Collection of Jacques Goudstikker,” on view there through September 7 before traveling to New York’s Jewish Museum in March 2009.

"Marei von Saher" originally appeared in the July 2008 issue of Art+Auction. For a complete list of articles from this issue available on ARTINFO, see Art+Auction's July 2008 Table of Contents.
