MONTEREY, Calif.— Automobile enthusiasts gatherin and around Monterey,California, every August for aseries of auctions held in conjunctionwith the PebbleBeach Concours d’Elegance.This year, RM Auctions? sales,on August 15 and 16, includethe subtly finned 1957Chrysler Diablo convertible(est. $2.5–3 million), a one-offdesign collaborationbetween the late Virgil Exnerand the famous Italiancar and coach-building firmCarrozzeria Ghia. TheBonhams and Butterfieldsauction on August 15 is offeringtwo important race cars: a1960 Jaguar E2A prototype,a precursor to the classic XKEroad car, expected to bringmore than $7 million, and the1969 Porsche 908 (est. $1.5–2 million) with which SteveMcQueen won second placein a 1970 race at Sebring, inFlorida. In its sales, onAugust 16 and 17, Gooding& Company has a 1934Triumph Dolomite 8C Twin-Cam Super-Charged, oneof only three produced, and anever-auctioned 1938 AlfaRomeo 6C-2300B roadster.
