Expanded Nelson-Atkins Boosts Attendance, But Still Sees Room to Grow

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has welcomed 465,000 visitors since its new Bloch building opened a year ago, a sum that, while well above the pre-expansion average of 350,000, falls short of the projected 650,000, the Kansas City Star reports.
Of those who attended the museum, the number who purchased tickets to special exhibitions such as a show on Impressionism — museum attendance is otherwise free — was 92,000, which director Marc Wilson said was "surprisingly low," although it also suggests that visitors are pleased with the museum's permanent exhibitions and have followed the museum's advice to simply "drop in." Going forward, he said, the museum will put extra resources toward marketing special exhibitions.
