Art Basel Acquires Stake in Design Miami The deal formalizes a relationship between the two fairs that had previously been based on “incredible synergy.” The Dragon Awakes The Zendai Museum of Modern Art took a major step in reaching out to Chinese collectors by organizing a special Miami trip. The question remains: Exactly how interested are Chinese collectors in non-Chinese art? The ARTINFO Miami Hotel Guide Everything you need to know about the rooms you’ll barely have to time to sleep in, from price gouging to where to find last-minute digs. Art Basel Miami Beach Auction Records set the Tone at Art Basel Dealers at the fair seem poised to capitalize on recent auction successes. Scouring the offerings a day before the opening, ARTINFO spotted works by several record-setters taking up plenty of booth space, with strong pieces attached. Basel’s Running of the (Art World) Bulls Prices seemed sky-high, or what’s referred to in the trade as “retail plus,” but in some corners of the convention center sour notes were easy to hear. Chinese Contemporary Going Fast While there wasn’t an abundance of contemporary Chinese art at Art Basel this year, what there was flew off the stands early, especially works by recognizable names. Van de Weghe’s 48 Hours, Nada’s Basquiat Wannabes The secondary dealer cleans up at Basel, while a copycat thrives at Nada. Satellite Fairs Art Miami: Same Formula, New Digs and Date The fair has moved and changed its date, but it retains its emphasis on accessible modern and contemporary artwork. Nada’s Solo Acts Thanks in large part to the decision by about a dozen galleries to give their booths over to solo presentations, the fair as a whole seemed more thoughtful, careful, and memorable than last year. Checking Pulse’s Pulse and Gauging Geisai Pulse continues to prove itself, while Geisai, new to Miami, offers an intimate atmosphere. Design Miami: Leather, Steel, Sofas, and Dreams “Star Trek” consoles, “Black Widow” seats, and “chairs that disappear in the rain” are among the fantasy-inspired works at the third-year fair. SCOPE Defies Expectations The fair, featuring 98 booths of emerging talent, is chock-full of playful works and “out-of-body” experiences. AIPAD and Photo Miami Draw Focused Audiences Photography has always played second fiddle to other mediums in Miami, but this year the genre is well represented with two lively fairs. Red Dot and Art Now: Bang for Your Buck These smaller, more affordable fairs offer some “kick-ass art for kick-ass people.” A Tale of Two Aquas Aqua opened with a bang, but the third-year fair’s new Wynwood offering was still warming up. Salon-Style Ink, Attitude-Free Flow Ink splashes art everywhere; Flow maneuvers light quarters. Pulse: That Reminds Me Of the hundreds of works on display at the fair this year, a few call to mind pieces by other, more famous artists – sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. That Ain’t Heavy, It’s My Turntable At Design Miami 2007, there’s a boomlet in weighty objects. Art Basel Miami Beach Themes The Naked and the Nude The unclothed male figure is having a resurgence at Art Basel this year. But as in Robert Graves’s famous poem, some of those depicted are merely naked, while others are slyly, or even brazenly, nude. Look Out for Latin The recent buzz about contemporary Latin artists continues at Art Basel, where work from stars such as Bedia, Kuitca, and Gerzso is joined by contributions from artists who are well known at home but relatively obscure internationally. At Art Basel: Paintings That Move The videos at this year’s fair tend to move toward the painterly, featuring high production values, careful compositions, and a stillness uncommon in a time-based medium. In the Air In the Air: Playing “I Spy” at Art Basel I spy with my little eye the “Cartier Dome,” Lance Armstrong sans bike, and some hotties from Rome. ARTINFO Columns Newsmaker: The Freshman Five The directors of the first-year Miami fairs tell how they’ll stand out in a sea of satellites. Art Basel Shopping Spree: If I Had $10 Million ARTINFO wanted to know what it was like to be a rich collector, and what it was like to be a very rich collector. So we asked two writers to go on virtual shopping sprees at Art Basel. We gave Judd Tully a considerable amount ($10 million) and Robert Ayers a much more modest sum ($10,000) and asked them each to come home with no more than six works. Here’s what Judd picked. Art Basel Shopping Spree: If I Had $10,000 All you can get for that amount at most booths is a wry smile from the dealer, Robert Ayers found out. Weekend Picks: Michele Oka Donner in Miami The Miami native, known for her installations, sculpture, jewelry, and furniture, offers offbeat insider picks for non-fair artgoing. A Day in the Life: Mickey Cartin The collector tells ARTINFO why he thinks the fairs have “Far too many artists, far too much stuff being made, way too many art dealers, and far too little editing and discrimation.” A Day in the Life: Javier Peres In Miami, dealer Javier Peres is on a 24-hour schedule. He’s also a 24-hour party person. From Art+Auction Still Growing Strong Miami’s annual art extravaganza is bigger than ever.
