Also aiming to raise Cuban art's profile abroad is the Havana Biennial, the tenth edition of which will be held next March. Organized by the Wilfredo Lam Center of Contemporary Art, the biennial hopes to solicit fellowships, invitations to exhibit, or gallery representation from abroad for featured Cuban artists, and to improve relations between the local and international art scenes. To this end, the 2009 biennial will lift the restriction from previous years that allowed only artists from “third world” countries to apply. Now not only will foreign collectors come to Cuba, foreign artists can too.
