Canadian National Gallery Curator Takes Indefinite Leave

OTTAWA— David Franklin, deputy director and chief curator of the National Gallery of Canada, has gone on indefinite leave, according to the Globe and Mail. He is widely presumed to have left the museum permanently; museum spokesperson Joanne Charette said only that he is "currently on leave" and that she is unaware of any timetable for his return.

The absence precedes an upcoming change in leadership at the museum, as a successor is currently being sought for director Pierre Théberge; Franklin has been suggested as a possible candidate and is rumored to be interested in the position. Also at stake if Franklin does not return are several planned major exhibitions: The NGC was slated for a 2009 exhibition of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, and a Caravaggio exhibition for 2011 or 2012.
