British Museum Staff Strike Over "Totally Inadequate" Pay Raise

LONDON—British Museum staff — members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) and Prospect unions — are striking over what they are calling a "totally inadequate" pay raise, the BBC reports. They have rejected an offer of a 1.6% pay raise plus £100 ($197) bonus. Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the PCS, said, "This action is a direct result of the government's shameful policy of attacking the living standards of public sector workers by capping pay rises to 2%." Workers at both the British Museum and the National Gallery walked out last Friday as part of the dispute.

British Museum representatives said the museum will remain open during the strike, though some galleries may be closed.
