Jean Watteau's recently rediscovered "La Surprise" fetched £12.3 million at Christie's (est. £3–5 million).
LONDON—Long-lost works by
Goya and
Jean Watteau fetched big numbers for
Christie's last night at its Old Masters auction, the BBC reports. Three drawings by Goya that had been presumed lost for 130 years until they were recently discovered in a private Swiss collection sold for more than £4 million ($7.9 million) combined.
Bajar rinendo (Down they come) went for £2.2 million, a world record for a Goya work on paper. Watteau's
La Surprise sold for £12.3 million, well above its £3–5 million pre-sale estimate and setting a record for the highest price ever paid for a French old master painting at auction. The work had recently been discovered hanging in an English country home after last being seen 160 years ago.
