LONDON—Photographs from the collection of the late businessman-cum-photographer Bern Schwartz have been donated to London's National Portrait Gallery, BBC News reports. The 140 works, all taken by the American photographer between 1975 and 1978, depict 20th-century British icons in surroundings that reflect their personalities and lives: Artists Henry Moore and David Hockney are shown in their studios with their artworks, and actor John Gielgud is pictured in his manor house in Buckinghamshire. While Schwartz's name may be unfamiliar to some, many of his photographs have become iconic images, like his 1977 portrait of Margaret Thatcher, which the former prime minister chose for her campaign poster. The gift from the Schwartz Foundation is one of the largest ever to be given to the gallery's primary collection.
