European Deputy to Face Charges of Vandalizing Cattelan SculptureBy ARTINFO

The European Parliament has decided to lift the immunity of a European deputy accused of vandalizing a Maurizio Cattelan sculpture in 2000, Artforum reports via Le Monde. Witold Tomczak, of the right-wing League of Polish Families party, has been charged in Poland for attacking Cattelan’s La Nona Ora (The Ninth Hour) when it was on view at a Warsaw gallery in 2000. Tomczak said that the sculpture, a life-size depiction of Pope John Paul II being hit by a meteorite, offended his religious beliefs.
In 2006, the deputy had his European immunity lifted for another violation, and he was forced to face charges for insulting police officers who pulled him over for driving the wrong way on a one-way street. |
