Banksy Identity Revealed?

LONDON—British tabloid the Mail On Sunday has claimed to have discovered Banksy's true identity, BBC News reports. According to the Mail, the mysterious graffiti artist who has kept his identity a secret is a man named Robin Gunningham. The paper says it identified him from a photograph of a man kneeling alongside a can of spray paint taken four years ago in Jamaica.

The only true biographical fact known about Banksy is that he comes from Bristol. Rumors have abounded as to his identity — one theory had that his real name is Robin Banks and that his parents think that he is a painter and decorator, and Gawker speculated in May that Banksy is actually known graffiti artist Nick Walker — but none has ever been verified.

Scott Nurse, a man who attended Britol Cathedral School with Gunningham, told the Mail that Gunningham was "extremely talented at art... I am not at all surprised if he is Bansky." An artist, Luke Egan, who has exhibited with Banksy and once shared an apartment with Gunningham, responded to the Mail's question of whether Gunningham was Banksy by saying, "Well, he wasn't then." Gunningham's father said he did not recognize the man in the Jamaica photograph, and his mother said that she never even had a son.

A Bansky spokeswoman refused to comment, telling the BBC, "We get these calls all the time... I'll say what I always say: I never confirm or deny these stories."
