Christie's New York has announced its first sale dedicated exclusively to international contemporary design, offering works by some of the most important designers living and working today. With pieces by Marc Newson, Forrest Myers, Zaha Hadid, Ron Arad, Maarten Baas, Shiro Kuramata, Ettore Sottsass, and Harush Shlomo, the auction of 30 lots is expected to fetch $1.2–1.7 million.
Highlights of the sale include Hadid's black Aqua table, with a table top that evokes a pool of black water, and Tejo Remy's set of mismatched drawers that can be rearranged indiscriminately and then held together with a canvas movers' strap. Kuramata, whose works reflect the intense creativity of postwar Japan, will have several pieces for sale.
The contemporary design sale will be on view in Christie's New York galleries September 5 to 8. The sale is scheduled for September 8.
