The Presidio Trust claims new construction at the Presidio's Main Post would hurt the park.

SAN FRANCISCO—The Presidio Trust issued a draft report this week saying that plans to demolish a number of old buildings and erect a 100,000-square-foot museum and a large lodge at the Presidio's Main Post would hurt the park, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The review mentions a number of issues raised by development that would potentially affect the park's historic integrity. Because the Presidio is a national historic landmark district, those issues will have to be addressed before plans can move forward. The trust will work with a number of historic experts to try and solve the problems.

Last year, Gap founders Donald and Doris Fisher announced their intentions to build a contemporary art museum at the Presidio's Main Post. A public meeting was held last month, which more than 700 people attended, the majority of them opposed to the plan. Attendees voiced concerns about such drastic changes to the site as well as potential traffic impacts. And before releasing this most recent report, the trust had already received letters from historic experts concerned about the museum and lodge.

A number of experts are now saying that they have more concerns not addressed by the trust's report. Anthony Veerkamp, a senior program officer for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, commented, "At this point, there are some Swiss cheese holes in their analysis." Gary Widman, the president of the Presidio Historical Association, said the report neither stresses the potential destruction of archaeological resources nor discusses how renovations to existing buildings will affect their historic integrity.

Clay Harrell, a trust spokesman, pointed out that the document is a draft and will evolve as more experts are consulted.
