Snake in the Grass?

Published: September 1, 2008
LONDON—For those in the know, many of the works in this summer’s “Richard Prince: Continuation” were for sale, even though the show was held at London’s publicly funded and not-for-profit Serpentine Gallery. “There have been a number of sales,” says a New York–based source familiar with the deals brokered by Gagosian Gallery in London. François Pinault was a big buyer, says another person, while two pictures—Surf Safari Nurse, 2007–08, and Nurse on Trial, 2005—went to Europeans in the neighborhood of $6.5 million each. All the pieces in the show came from the artist’s private collection. Reached for comment, Serpentine stated that the exhibited Richard Prince works were not for sale “by us” while one London dealer quipped, “I hope [Gagosian] gives them a good commission.”
