CHEMNITZ, Germany—Vandals in this former East German city, renamed Karl Marx Stadt from 1953 to 1990, have repeatedly vandalized a
Christo-esque art installation involving a monument to Marx, reports the
Süddeutsche Zeitung. For the work, students from a nearby town surrounded the monument — a giant likeness of Marx's head completed by Ukrainian sculptor
Lew Kerbel in 1971 — with scaffolding wrapped with white fabric. Vandals have destroyed the cube surrounding the monument and two loudspeakers from which readings from Marx's
Das Kapital were looped during the day.
