SAGALASSOS, Turkey—Sections of a marble statue of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius have been discovered in a Roman-era bath in Sagalassos, in western Turkey, Agence France-Presse reported. Belgian and Turkish excavators unearthed the remains, including the figure's large head, his right hand holding up a globe, and his lower legs.
Marc Waelkens, a professor at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, led the team who made the discovery at the same site where remnants of a statue of the emperor Hadrian were found last August. According to experts, the statue of Aurelius — one of the most famous Stoic philosophers, whose reign lasted from A.D. 161 to 180 — was said to be 15 feet tall. |
