MOSCOW—The State Tretyakov Gallery, which holds Moscow's largest collection of Russian art, has said that it's entered talks with the city government about building a new space for its modern and contemporary art collection, reports Bloomberg.

The federally owned museum's 20th-century collection — about 54,000 of its 152,000 works — is currently mostly housed in the city-owned Central House of Artists, which the city plans to tear down. Following rumors that a new structure designed by Norman Foster would serve as the replacement, reported by ARTINFO in March, the city has planned a meeting in mid-September to discuss proposals for the new building.

"We're not against the city's plans, but we have one strict condition," said Irina Lebedeva, deputy director of the Tretyakov. "Before we vacate the Central House of Artists the city must first build us a new space that meets the finest standards of a 21st-century museum."
