NEW YORK—Ann Temkin will succeed John Elderfield as chief curator of painting and sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, the museum announced today. Temkin has worked at MoMA since 2003 as a curator of a painting and sculpture, playing a key role in the acquisition of important works by both established and younger artists, planning and implementing the reinstallation of MoMA's painting and sculpture collection in 2004, and organizing numerous exhibitions. She worked as a curatorial assistant at MoMA from 1984 to 1987 and a curator of modern and contemporary art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 1990 to 2003.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.—Emmy-winning animator Bill Melendez (born Cuauhtémoc Melendez) died on September 2 at the age of 91. Melendez was known largely for his work on Charles M. Schulz's "Peanuts" characters; he was the only animator Schulz allowed to recreate the characters on the screen. He began his career at Disney, helping to animate Fantastia, Pinocchio, and a number of Mickey Mouse cartoons. After an animators' strike at Disney in 1941, he moved to Leon Schlesinger Productions, which was later acquired by Warner Brothers, to work on Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig. He started his own studio, Bill Melendez Productions, in 1964. Melendez also served as the voice of Snoopy in the film and television versions of the Peanuts by speaking gibberish into a tape recorder, speeding it up, and using the result.
