SYDNEY—Melbourne artist Virginia Grayson has won the Dobell Prize for Drawing, reports the Australian Associated Press. Grayson, a first-time entrant into the competition, was awarded $20,000 (U.S. $18,000) for her work No Conclusions Drawn, which depicts the artist standing in an urban setting.
Grayson told reporters that the drawing is about the struggle to draw conclusions and reflects the way she sees life. Anne Kirker, one of the judges of the prize, commented on the self portrait: "It is a reflection of the difficulty in today's world to pin down identity and indeed 'reality.'" No Conclusions Drawn will be on view at the Art Gallery of New South Wales until November 9, along with the work of other finalists. As part of the prize, the gallery keeps each year's winning drawing. |
