NEW YORK—
Christie's Impressionist and Modern Art sale yesterday raised a total of $3.43 million, surpassing pre-sale estimates of $1.98–2.79 million. Of 170 lots on offer, 146 sold, for 86 percent by lot and 94 percent by value.
The list of top ten lots shows several works that doubled or quadrupled their high estimates — or better. The day sale's top seller,
Alexander Archipenko's painting
Nude, fetched $218,500, more than nine times its high estimate of $24,000.
Yvonne Canu brought in $76,900 against a high estimate of $25,000 for her painting
Boats on Harbour with Flags, and
Gustav Klimt's drawing
Portrait of a Woman made $68,500, more than triple the high estimate of $20,000.
Jean-Pierre Cassigneul had three of the top ten lots — oils going for between $74,500 and $158,500 — and
Robert Pinchon had two — oils earning between $60,000 and $70,000.
"Today’s sale reiterated the continuing strength of the middle market, with works of good quality, attractively priced, proving highly desirable," said
Stefany Sekara, the specialist in charge of the sale. "We now look forward to our November sales here in New York with continued confidence."
