Damien Hirst's “Ascended” (2008) went to an anonymous bidder for £2,281,250 (est. £500–700,000).
The packed session mimed Monday evening's feeding frenzy in this historic sale of newly minted works. London's White Cube, the artist's London gallery, continued its support of the Hirst market, nabbing the rather grisly The Broken Dream (2008), consisting of a severed foal's head implanted with a unicorn horn, encased in a glass vitrine full of formaldehyde solution; a gold-plated steel knife completes the slaughter-house package. The piece sold for a relatively cheap £505,250 (est. £600–800,000). If that seemed like a bottom-fishing bargain, the sale offered plenty of chances to go overboard, like the überdecorative and abstract butterfly grid Ascended, also from 2008, which went to an anonymous bidder for £2,281,250 (est. £500–700,000).
