AMSTERDAM—Dutch police have recovered five 17th-century paintings that were stolen from the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, the Netherlands, in 2002, reports the Associated Press. The paintings include works by Jan Steen Cornelis Bega, Cornelis Dusart, and Adriaan van Ostade, whose The Contented Drinker is considered the greatest masterpiece of the five. Of the works, insured for $4.3 million at the time of the theft, three are known to be damaged, though the extent of the damage is unknown. Over the weekend, police arrested three people in the southern Netherlands in connection with the case.
