LIVERPOOL—The 35-year-old artist Peter McDonald has won the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize for his piece entitled Fontana, reports Bloomberg. The slashed canvas is a provocative take on the work of Italian postwar artist Lucio Fontana, who is known for abstract canvases with evocative incisions.

"Peter's winning painting acts as a tantalizing and provocative glimpse into the way we think," judge Graham Crowley said.

The biennial John Moores prize is the biggest contemporary painting competition in the U.K. Currently in its 50th year, the prize awards £25,000 pounds ($45,520) to the winner. Past recipients of the prize include David Hockney, Richard Hamilton, and Peter Doig
