Jurors Allison Peters Quinn, director of exhibitions at the Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; Matthew Drutt, executive director of Artpace San Antonio; and Fred Wilson, a New York–based artist, selected the following finalists from among more than 650 applications: Melika Bass, Juan Angel Chávez, Jim Duignan, Jeanne Dunning, Theaster Gates, Amanda Gutierrez, Michael Hernandez de Luna, Kelly Kaczynski, Marie Krane Bergman/Cream Co., David Leggett, Dutes Miller and Stan Shellabarger, Kim Piotrowski, Deb Sokolow, Deborah Stratman, and Tony Tasset. New jurors Tumelo Mosaka, assistant curator of exhibitions, Brooklyn Museum; and Kristin Poole, artistic director at the Sun Valley Arts Center, Idaho, join Allison Peters Quinn for the final studio visits that will help to determine the 10 artists selected for awards ranging from $1,500 to $15,000. The list of winners will be announced by early November. Christopher Vroom, Artadia founder and board president, said: “The artists selected for this year’s Artadia Awards shortlist exemplify the diversity of artistic practice and perspective that makes ours a great society. They underscore the varied roles that artists play in our communities — their practice, their viewpoint, and their deep engagement in civic and educational life not only help us see the world in new ways but make us want to be involved in a positive way.” Artadia has also announced the beginning of a grants process for artists in Atlanta, the organization’s fifth awards city. Applicants can access the application online through December 1; a shortlist of 15 artists will be announced in early 2009, and the finalists by the end of the year. |
