AMSTERDAM—A previously unknown work by 17th-century painter Pieter Brueghel the Younger has been discovered in an elderly woman's possessions, reports the Associated Press. The small, circular painting, measuring 6.7 inches across, portrays a farmer and his wife resting against a tree that bears the artist's signature.

The painting, which has been dated to approximately 1620, was featured on Between Art & Kitsch, a Dutch art television program. The owner bought the painting from an antiques dealer in 1950 for 100 guilders, or €650 ($925). It is now estimated to be worth around €100,000.

John Hoogsteder
, an art dealer in The Hague, determined the work's authenticity. "Because of the raised paint, which is caused by the contraction of the wooden panel, I'm convinced that it's an original from that time," he said.
